Created by Waterford Consultant Surgeon Gordon Watson in 2005, SERT.'s mission was to provide transport for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford or at Cork University Hospital.

In the first few months, SERT.'s team approached local businesses for donations to fund the purchase of the first vehicle and get the service running. With the personnel from local factories, Bausch and Lomb and Waterford Crystal among the original donors, SERT was able to buy the first two vehicles in the fleet.

During the first two years of operation, SERT helped cancer patients in the South East travel to and from Dublin and Cork for their radiotherapy. In 2007, the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford was established allowing local access to radiotherapy within the South East. Currently SERT driver services are available in Waterford City, Dungarvan, Kilkenny, Wexford and Clonmel  transporting patients to the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford.

In 2016, approximately 1 out of every 4 patients attending the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford use SERT's service.
